About the Tour

The river Elbe transports the North Sea tide directly to the city of Hamburg: the quay walls of our canals bear the mossy witness of an impressive 3.5-meter difference in the water height – that is if the weather and the sea are quiet! It’s not the only sign of the nearness of the sea, Hamburg shows. The connection with the Atlantic brought Hamburg wealth ever since the Hanseatic League was erected, but was also the city’s Achilles tendon: after several invasions by Viking fleets – we’re very near Scandinavia here up north- Hamburg had to build itself up from scratch.

On our tour, we are going to take a walk along the stream, meanwhile exploring landmarks that have to do with Hamburg’s history with the sea. The walk includes stairs and uneven pavements.

Our stations:

Jungfernstieg promenade: chillout zone at the quay of the Inner Alster lake

The extravagant city hall

About the Guide
‘Heerlijk’ means delicious, lovely and comfortable all at once in Dutch, which quite nicely captures the Hamburg-feeling! So, I’m originally from the Netherlands, Germany’s neighbour in the west. I’m delighted by • The diverse and amazing buildings we have: from the historic and very German and majestic ‘Belle époque’ (around 1900’s)- houses, over many typically northern-German baroque brick buildings to the modern architecture in our breath-taking Harbour city-project. • Hamburg’s opulent greenness, the amazing richness in trees, flowers, plants, thanks amongst others to our huge parks and a quarter of a million trees lining the streets • The amazing waterside and the variety of waterways, resulting in 2.500 bridges and lots of possibilities to relax at or on the water. I’m fascinated as well by all the visible and historical remains and scars that World War II left in the city and of course there’s a lot to tell and see around ships, Hamburg having been home to numerous wharf
