Funchal Old Town Free Tour

The Old Town of Funchal was the first Portuguese neighborhood outside the European Continent. Right away, a community of fishermen and seafarers was created. For centuries, this people lived in very precarious conditions. The Old Town of Funchal got to the beginning of the 21st Century as the area to avoid in Funchal. Thanks to people with knowledge of other Old Towns in Europe and with a great vision, Zona Velha do Funchal has gained a new face, a new dynamics and today, it is a mandatory place to visit, not only for visitors, but also for locals. On this tour, we will see the two main Forts of Funchal (Forte de São Lourenço and Forte de São Tiago), The Legislative Assembly, the Pillory Square, some of the painted doors in Rua Santa Maria and end the tour on the beautiful viewpoint of Barreirinha.

I was born and raised in Funchal and since I was 14 years old, I dreamed of being a Guide and showing travelers my little piece of heaven. I became a mountain guide in 2016 and fulfilled part of my dream, guiding people in the incredible nature of Madeira. In 2018, I had the challenge of starting the Free Tours in my city. I accepted the challenge and I feel very happy and fortunate to share the best of the city and the mountains with our visitors!
