The history of Budapest cannot be told without the story of its Jewish inhabitants. Jews, brought by Romans, were here even before Magyars arrived at the end of the ninth century. Throughout turbulent history the relationship between the two was turbulent, with ups and downs, but ultimately Jewish numbers swelled, and, at the beginning of the 20th century,
Budapest was the third largest Jewish city in the world, after New York and Warsaw. And, at the heart of it all was Jewish Quarter – most vibrant, energetic, alive part of Budapest. Then came the darkness of Nazism and Hungarian Jews were almost completely wiped out.
On our tour you will learn about all of this and much more. We’ll see many traces of Jewish heritage, led by majestic synagogues, which rival any in the whole world with their beauty and grace. This part of the city is also well known for its street art and ruin bars.
