Bilbao La Vieja (The old Bilbao) has coexisted with the Old City since its beginning, because of its location right on the other side of the river estuary. Bilbao la Vieja became the centre of the industrial activity in the late 19th and for the whole 20th century, because it was there where the mines of steel and iron were.
Today, it´s the alternative, multi - coloured, multi ethnic and most interesting neighbourhood of the city.
Art Centres and Galleries, creativity - focused businesses, ethnic restaurants and bars, the whole gay night life, all these together form the most inter- racial district of the city. It is a warm and authentic district, gathering as no other the mixture of people and arts, natives and emigrants, artists from all over Europe along with the local proud Basque people, the gay community and all these people are happy and proud to live in Bilbao la Vieja.
