About the Tour
Astorga's cathedral began to be built in the mid-15th century , and is one of the most important monuments in the city. It is known that it was built on the foundations of a pre-existing Romanesque church, dating from the s. XI. It has the peculiarity that it took three centuries to finish it, well into the 18th century, due to its mix of styles: Gothic in structure, but with a Baroque and a Renaissance façade.
Can you imagine what it meant to build a cathedral for a town that had barely 500 inhabitants in the 15th century?
On one of the spiers of the apse there is a statue of Pedro Mato , a popular Astorgan hero who "takes care" of the city from above.
